The Power of Smell

New research in aromatherapy

If you put “essential oils” in the search bar of PubMed you will get over 25,000 results Not all this research is relevant to complementary therapists, but it shows the level of interest there is in finding out more about these powerful oils and how they work.

At a recent Aromatherapy conference, there was a powerful presentation by Mark Moss the Head of the Department of Psychology at Northumbria University in Newcastle, England.  He presented a paper on the use of Rosemary essential oil for clearing Brain Fog in Menopausal women.

Another presentation was by Rachel Herz, Ph.D. a neuroscientist and world leading expert on the psychological science of smell. She has been conducting research on the senses, emotion, perception, motivated behaviour, and cognition since 1990. Her presentation was on Olfactory Virtual Reality for treating PTSD in American soldiers returning from war.

These wonderful presentations build on our syllabus at Obus Academy where we have always included the use of essential oils for emotional healing and wellbeing. During this short talk I will present 2 simple methods of using the power of essential oils to increase wellbeing, offer comfort, ease anxiety, aid sleep, and generally uplift the spirit.
